Advice and Treatment For Hair Loss and Scalp Problems from Trichologist Sally-Ann Tarver of The Cotswold Trichology Centre

I’m Here To Help You With Hair Loss

Losing hair is stressful and can affect your self confidence and self esteem. Loss of hair is traditionally considered a male problem however, as hair is a symbol of a woman’s femininity and sexuality, hair loss for women can be psychologically damaging. Trichologists are trained to diagnose and advise on all aspects of hair loss and scalp conditions. Since I set up my practice in 1998, I have seen and helped many patients with both common and rare or unusual scalp and hair loss conditions. If you have a hair loss problem or are concerned about any aspect of your hair I recommend you act sooner rather than later to seek advice from a qualified reputable Trichologist. I am also a wig consultant and all too frequently I see clients who could have been treated for a problem had they got the right advice when it first started..

On this site you can read more about hair loss in women and female hair loss treatment, the cause of hair loss for men, Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis and Universalis, scalp treatment and scalp problems and ladies wigs on their dedicated pages.

We can help with Scalp problems

The Cotswold Trichology Centre is not just a hair loss treatment clinic. I treat just as many clients with scalp conditions as I do for hair loss problems. Unfortunately not all Trichologists are equipped to deal with the clinical treatment of flaky itchy scalp conditions like scalp eczema, scalp psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis and may just offer shampoos and lotions to use at home due to a lack of clinical treatment facilities. Clinical scalp treatment is a really important part of bringing any of these scaly scalp problems under control. To read more about scalp conditions visit our scalp problem page, or to find out about the scalp treatment method I use please read the scalp treatment page.

Supply and Fit Ladies Wigs Too!

I began offering this service in 2008 largely through demand from my own Trichology clinic patients. Many of my patients who needed wigs either temporarily or permanently and were unhappy with the service they received from local wig consultants. I offer wig fitting and cutting following training by Trevor Sorbie's 'my new hair' initiative. Most of my wig clients come largely for medical purposes such as Alopecia Areata and Totalis or while undergoing Chemotherapy treatment. I can offer both ready to wear and custom made ladies wigs, volumisers or hair pieces for ladies with thinning hair are also extremely popular. You can read more about our ladies wig service here.

All ‘Ladies’ Welcome!

As well as ladies who have a medical need for a wig, I have gained a large number of Transgender clients over the years. I am happy to offer the same quality of wig service to my Transsexual and Transvestite clients as I would to any other lady! In fact I find it quite refreshing to be able to offer advice that this group of client would not get at your average wig clinic.

Cotswold Trichology - Frequently asked Questions

Q. What causes loss of hair?

A. There are infinite reasons for loss of hair. Acute sudden hair loss is likely to be caused by something which happened around 2-3 months before its onset. If hair thinning occurs gradually over a period of years it is likely to be caused by problems such as Anaemia, Hypothyroidism, poor diet, long term stress, medications, health issues or genetic factors.

Q. Are the causes of hair loss for women and men different?

A. There are differences in loss of hair in women and men. Post menopausal women can suffer a similar form of loss of hair as men known as female pattern baldness but it is usually slower than in men and less extensive. Younger women are more likely to suffer Chronic Telogen Effluvium a diffuse loss of hair you can read about this on our hair loss in women page. Hair loss for men is usually a genetic problem although a small number of men may also suffer acute or Chronic Telogen Effluvium.

Q. Do All hair loss treatments work?

A. The honest answer would be no! It depends on the cause of your hair loss problem, the most important thing is to find out why your hair is falling out before buying random expensive hair loss treatments in the hope the something might just work. If you have a genetic problem, hair loss vitamins won’t work for you just as if you are losing hair due to nutritional deficiency, topical hair loss treatments like Regain (minoxidil) won’t help.

Q. Do you treat patients of all ethnic minorities?

A. Yes! 50% of the Trichologists clinical observation training was spent at the Institute of Trichologists original scalp and hair hospital in Brixton where the clientele were predominately black. We are very familiar with black and Asian scalp and hair problems and have a lot of clients from ethnic minorities who travel from south Birmingham and Coventry as we are the closest Registered Trichologists.
