Why
Visit a Trichologist?
Trichologists are professionally
trained for a minimum of three years in all aspects of hair
loss, scalp disease and hair condition issues. Trichologists
in full time practice will see both common and unusual conditions
on a day to day basis. A person may spend time and money visiting
therapists who aren’t experts in this field and still
not find a solution to a problem which may be obvious to an
experienced Trichologist.
A Trichologist is not qualified
to diagnose medical disorders but in the process of finding
the cause of a hair or scalp problem, you may discover a health
issue you have suffered with for years. Many patients have been
diagnosed with conditions such as hypothyroidism and pernicious
anaemia due to test requests made by a Trichologist
Your
First Visit
The first step towards recovery
from hair loss or a scalp problem is an initial consultation
to find out what has gone wrong. All new patients require an
initial consultation lasting approximately an hour. Due to our
high ethical standards we regret we are unable to diagnose conditions
or recommend treatment by post, email or telephone.
During your consultation your Trichologist will ask questions
about areas of your life such as your diet, lifestyle, health,
medications and stress amongst other things. The discussion
will be relevant to your condition and completely confidential.
We will often ask you to visit your GP for blood tests or if
you have had tests recently, please bring a copy to your appointment.
We use a Microcamera to aid
diagnosis of both hair loss and scalp problems. This is a highly
powerful hand held camera which is capable of enlarging images
up to 200 times; the live image is projected onto a monitor.
This is vastly more accurate and scientific than the magnifying
glass used by most Trichologists. In hair loss cases, hair samples
may also be examined under a polarised light microscope for
a more detailed analysis of the hair root.
Hair
Loss and Scalp Treatment
At the end of your consultation
you will be given a professional opinion on the cause of your
hair loss or scalp problem and an explanation of the best approach
to its management. At The Cotswold Trichology Centre, we pride
ourselves on using a holistic approach to hair loss and scalp
problems wherever possible. We will often suggest lifestyle
and diet changes based on what you have mentioned during your
consultation.
To support these changes and
speed up the recovery, we can recommend high quality dietary
supplements, hair loss treatments and topical scalp treatments
to use at home. Not only is this holistic approach beneficial
to your hair and scalp health, most patients notice increased
energy levels or better skin quality as an added bonus.
It
may be necessary to attend the clinic for treatments particularly
in cases of itch flaky scalp problems like scalp Eczema, Dermatitis
and scalp Psoriasis. Treatments at the Trichology clinic can
dramatically increase success rates of managing these types
of problem over home treatment alone.
Sometimes a condition maybe outside the scope of a Trichologists expertise or additional help from another practitioner may be beneficial.
Other practitioners you may be referred to:
Medical Doctor, Dermatologist, Hair Transplant Surgeon, Nutritionist, Wig Consultant, Allergy Therapist, Councilor |

Hair Mineral Analysis
Hair mineral analysis is a soft tissue mineral biopsy. An analysis of a body tissue, in this case to detect mineral levels. HMA provides a reading of the mineral levels in the cells and interstitial spaces of the hair over a three-month period. HMA is a screening test and by definition is not intended to diagnose any medical disease or condition.
It is a relatively simple and painless test that can provide information quickly and inexpensively. A useful test for detecting nutritional imbalances and heavy metal toxicity, which can help take some of the guesswork out of recommending supplements and dietary changes.
The test entails cutting a small sample of hair from the nape of the neck, approximately 1 gram, using the first 4cm of growth from the scalp. Hair that is coloured or permanent waved cannot be used. The sample is sent away to a laboratory, the levels of each mineral are measured and the results are returned to myself in the form of a chart. I frequently use this test in hair loss cases. Often results show mineral imbalances, deficiencies, excesses and toxic metals that would have been almost impossible to discover without the test.
